One of the regions they went was Korea and enchanted by their pottery making, they captured the skillful artisans back to Kyushu and adapted the Satsuma Japanese cultural influences into the pottery creations.
Most Sutsuma pottery creations are in vases, statuettes, kitchenware, teapot sets and buttons. The vases and tea pots bare images of country side, flora and fauna and wild creatures of the region. The statuettes are produced that are caricature of people or adorable figures. Most of the Satsuma enameled paintings have raised relief which give cleverly added attraction.
Limited pottery vases, tea pots and kitchenware called 'Gosu Blue' were produced mostly for the Japanese market around the 1850's and are rare with great demand. These pottery were still from the Kyushu region. The yellowish cream coloured pottery items mostly exported were popular and were later produced by potters around Kyoto, Tokyo and Yokohama. The more documented and high valued Satsuma collection would be from the Kinkosan House. Markings on the pottery items to show the artist and the 'Kanji' symbol authentize the items. Further research of the information of the displayable Satsuma pottery would justify the high price. There are no English markings on authentic Satsuma creations.
